Taiwan’s military relations with Beijing have fallen to their lowest point in four decades, the island’s defense minister warned on Wednesday, following a series of record incursions by Chinese planes into Taipei’s air defense zone.

“For the military, the current situation is the most difficult in more than 40 years since I joined the service,” Chiu Kuo-cheng told parliament as about 150 Chinese warplanes broke through Taiwan’s air defense zone since Beijing marked National Day on Friday.

The incursions have drawn criticism from Washington and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen warned in an article published Tuesday of “catastrophic consequences” if the island belonged to China.
