Santorini is one of the most famous and popular of all the Greek islands. It makes sense in many ways – just google the island and you’ll fall in love with it.

For this reason, tourism on the island has skyrocketed, and Fira, the capital of the island, is undoubtedly one of the most visited places.

Fira is perched on the cliffs of the caldera on the west coast of the island, directly opposite a rather imposing but stunningly beautiful volcano. Very tourist-oriented during the summer months, there’s plenty to see and do here, including theaters, galleries, shopping and some seriously fun nightlife. You won’t struggle to find various restaurants, bars, cocktail bars and even nightclubs.

Although it is possible to visit Santorini by boat, while your island hopping around Greece, most people usually fly into Thira International Airport. This airport serves international and domestic flights and is extremely busy during the summer. Of course, before you get to Fira, you’ll need to figure out how to get there from the airport.

Santorini may be a famous island, but it is small, and that generally means you have very limited resources when it comes to getting from A to B. In this case, you can take a public bus or a taxi.

Both are reasonable options, and since there is a very short distance between the airport and Fira, at only 5km, the journey should really only take 30 minutes maximum whichever option you choose, depending on traffic.

Your first and cheapest option is to take a public bus. The buses are big, like buses, and all are air-conditioned, so you can expect a comfortable journey. The airport has one arrivals terminal, so go outside and see the KTEL bus station that takes you to Fira.

Your journey should take around 25 minutes, although you may notice extra traffic during the summer months, which could slow you down a bit. This bus is also the only direct bus on the island, so if you want to connect to another town, such as Oia, you will need to head to the main bus station in Fira and find your next bus from there.

The bus runs at different times depending on the time of year, and there are more buses in the summer months. In the peak season, there are 16 buses a day, the first at 6:25 a.m. and the last at 10:25 p.m. Buses run every hour after the morning timetable is determined, with one bus at 7.25am, another at 8.40am, and then every hour from 10.10am onwards.

To return to the airport from Fira, you arrive by the same bus from the main bus station, with the first bus leaving at 6:15 a.m. and the last at 10:15 p.m. There are 16 trips during the summer months.

During the winter months, buses are less frequent in both directions and usually have enough passengers waiting to make the trip worthwhile. In that case, you’ll need to check the timetable closer to your departure date to decide whether a bus or taxi is a better option.

Tickets are purchased with cash only from the driver, and services operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with no assigned seats. Tickets cost only a few euros, and a one-way trip costs less than 2 euros.

You can take a taxi from the airport to Fira directly outside the arrivals terminal. There are usually plenty of taxis, although, during peak season, you may have to wait a bit for a taxi to arrive. The second option is far more relaxed and convenient, but will cost you more than the bus.

Taxis are metered, although you should expect your journey to take around half an hour and cost around €35. Your travel time may be longer if there is a lot of traffic.

To get back to the airport from Fira, you can head to the main bus station in Fira and find taxis lined up outside. The journey will take the same amount of time, about half an hour, and you will still pay via the meter.
