Dominican charged with murder in death of Vietnamese acquaintance in Osaka channel – TokyoReporter

OSAKA (TR) – Police in Osaka Prefecture have arrested a male Dominican citizen in the death of an acquaintance from Vietnam in a canal in the city of Osaka, reports TBS News (August 6).

On Thursday, police charged Brian Albert Cabrero Cruz, 26, with murder. “I won’t talk until after talking to a lawyer,” Cruz of police said.

According to police, Cruz repeatedly attacked a male victim (21) along the promenade for the Dotonbori Canal in the Chuo department, until he fell into the water at around 8.20pm on Sunday.

Ambulance staff arrived at the scene and pulled the Vietnamese citizen out of the water. However, it was later confirmed that he was dead in the hospital. The cause of death drowned, the police announced earlier.

Prior to the incident, Cruz and the victim were drinking on the promenade with several other men.

Graphic footage posted on social media shows a man believed to be Cruz kicking and stepping on the victim’s head while holding on to a fence. He continues to beat him until he falls into the water.

The day after the incident, police found Cruz at a business hotel in the Nishinari city department in Osaka city. He was initially detained on suspicion of violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
